Directory 1992 |

|
In March 1982 the Department
of Environment , Government of India generously supported
the Environmental Group, World Wildlife Fund India in Organizing
an All India Conference of Non Governmental Organisation
Working on Environmental Protection. This Conference was
followed by a year long effort by the ESG to serve as a
focal point for NGO support activities in Delhi. A First
edition of the Directory was brought out by us in March
1983.
We have listed groups whose activities
, in any aspect, relate to environmental concerns-greening
and ecological restoration, sustainable use of natural resources,
development and propagation of appropriate technologies,
environmental education, training and public awareness,
protection of human health and well being, etc. Indeed only
such activities have been listed against organization even
if their work encompasses other aims and goals also.
The Department of Environment is making
efforts to mobilize NGO support for environmental planning,
information dissemination and education. |

Directory 1989 |

The number of Volutary
agencies, community groups, academic societies, corporate
entities (NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION) involved in work
that may be termed environmental has increased significantly
in the last few years)
India’s impressively large body of NGOs
is becoming active on the environmental front because of
the increasingly clear nexus between meaningful, equitable
, sustainable economic growth and the conservation of the
environment.
A subject of much interest within the environment
community is the continuing development of NGO networks
functioning around specific environmental objectives. This
1989 edition of ESG’s Directory of Environmental Ngos in
India contribute to the networking process. Information
published herein is based largely on responses received
by the ESG survey out in 1988. |

Directory 1986 |
| |
|
(This 1986 edition of
the Directory of Environmental NGOs in India) features 320
NGO profiles as also 95 NGOs for whom only address are available.
The Index provided at the end lists all the NGOs alphabetically.
The Directory has been compiled through a survey carried
out in the latter half of 1985 and first quarter of 1986.
Efforts by various prominent groups to
set up cooperating networks around specific projects or
programmes (e.g. Wasteland Development. Narmada Valley Development,
Himalayan Development, Ganga Action Plan) are now showing
signs of success. There is also a far greater level of professional
competence being displayed by NGOs in questioning and projecting
alternatives to, official development programmes. Happily,
the Government itself is increasingly encouraging NGOs to
take on professional assignments especially those involving
mobilizing of public support for environmental management. |

This reports on ENVIRONMENT
IN THE INDIAN PARLIAMENT- 1983 For both house Lok Sabha
and Rajya Sabha) since 1980 our staff has mined and systematically
compiled information on programmes, projected, issues, episodes
and official policies of significance to environmental management.
Question / Answer and “matters under rule 377” that had
to do with classical environmental subjects such as pollution,
energy conservation, waste recycling, wildlife pest infestation,
forestry, soil erosion,etc.
The detailed index with which each volume
commences is aimed at guiding the reader to the required
information.
We wish to place on record our gratitude
to the late Dr. N.L. Ramanathan for inducing us to undertake
this project. Dr. T.N. Khoshoo’s constant stress pm systematic
documentation of available environmental information to
aid development planning has been a catalyst for many of
ESG’s information dissemination projects of which these
annual compilation are an importance part. Finally, we hope
that these publication will underpin Y. Digvijay Sinh’s
tireless efforts at organizing and activating the parliamentary
and Legislative forums on Environment. |
